Frequently asked questions.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

While we do understand the importance of introducing children to community service, and we do welcome families and youth groups to volunteer, we recommend that no children under 10 years old volunteer at shelter. We also ask that parents and guardians of youth speak with their children about confidentiality and appropriate behavior before coming to shelter.

Where do I go/where do I bring food?

Our shelter is located at 220 E Hickory Street in Mankato, inside First Presbyterian Church. The church is directly behind Wells Fargo, and the door is right across the street from Hotel Alexander. There is a Connections Shelter sign on the door. There will be staff in the lobby beginning at 5pm and they will let you in and give you further directions.

How much food should I make?

We have 48 beds in shelter, so we recommend cooking for 50 people, with enough for second helpings. We know that’s a lot, which is why we recommend sharing the load with a friend or family member. If you need ideas, you can visit our Meal Ideas page here, which lists different meals and portion recommendations.

Can I heat up food at the shelter?

We do have several large roasters, a stove and an oven. While we can heat up things that won’t take too long (bread, sauces, etc.) it is recommended that you bring it warm, and we will do our best to keep it warm.

Can I drop the food off early?

Our staff do not arrive at the shelter until 4pm. If you need to drop it off after 4pm, please call the shelter at (507) 995-4952 and tell the staff. If you need to drop it off before 4pm, please call the Drop-in Center at (507) 720-6907 to make arrangements.

Do you have food restrictions or allergies?

This varies by the current guests. We do usually have at least one vegetarian guest, so planning for that is appreciated. You are welcome to call the Drop-in Center closer to your date to ask for up-to-date information.

What happens to the leftovers?

We have several ways that we use leftovers, if there are any. We pack lunches for guests who work during the day, we will pass out plates to anyone who comes to the shelter door asking for food, and we will also package up anything left to pass out at the Drop-in Center the next day. Rest assured that all food will be given out to folks who need it, and nothing is wasted.

Do I need to bring utensils/plates/silverware?

No. We have everything we need to serve at the shelter.

Can I bring additional drinks such as lemonade?

Of course! Our guests always appreciate lemonade or other drinks.

What should I wear?

There is no specific dress code, but we do ask that you dress comfortably, but appropriately. If you are a part of a group, you can wear a group t-shirt, otherwise we recommend jeans, t-shirts and comfortable shoes. We have aprons for meal servers to wear, if requested.
