Cooking for Shelter

Are you interested in making a meal, but not quite sure what to make? Check out our meal ideas below, along with recommended quantities!

We know that cooking for 50+ people (plus extra) can be a daunting and expensive task. We recommend sharing the load with friends or family members. Remember - many hands make light work!

Casserole or Hotdish

This is Minnesota, so hotdish is always a hit! Any type of casserole that has protein, carbs and veggies will do the job. Be creative!

Recommended sides: steamed veggies, salad, bread

Amounts: Plan for at least 4 pans that are 9x13 or equivalent. 2-3 pans for side dishes.

Taco Bar

A taco bar is a great, cost effective way to provide a filling meal and is always a hit with our guests.  Serve with hard or soft taco shells, or change it up and serve over baked potatoes!

Recommended toppings and sides: lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, shredded cheese, nacho cheese, sour cream, guacamole, rice, and beans.

Amounts: Plan for 2-4 tacos per person, depending on size, plus some extra for big appetites.

Sandwich Bar

Hot sandwiches with a few different fillings are a great option to feed a lot of people. One poultry option, one red meat option and one veggie option is perfect for everyone!

Recommended fillings: chicken bacon ranch, philly cheesesteak, pulled pork, turkey and cheese, french dip.  Recommended sides: chips, pasta/macaroni salad, veggies, fruit salad

Amounts: plan for 1-2 six-inch sandwiches per person (or equivalent).

Meatballs

Meatballs are an easy and filling option that you can dress up many different ways! Serve with a red sauce, teriyaki or sweet chili sauce, or go for Swedish meatballs!

Recommended sides: pasta, rice, stir-fry veggies, salad

Amounts: Plan for 5-10 meatballs per person, depending on the size. They will probably fill 2-3 large crockpots or roasters. For side dishes, plan for 2-3 pans that are 9x13 or equivalent.
